Background
The goal of this study is to collect health
information from the surf community in Queens and Nassau County, New York. This
analysis is meant to raise awareness about the potential for impaired waters to
impact the health of surfers based on the amount of time and frequency that
they are in the water. Studies show that human exposure to bacteria and
pathogens in water can lead to an increased risk in gastrointestinal illness (GI),
ear, eye and skin infections, respiratory complications, and in some cases
meningitis and hepatitis.[1] In
New York City, as in many cities with older infrastructure, these bacteria and
pathogens often enter the water after rain events.
Please help to us track your health by logging as much information as you would like to share. No personal information will be shared unless you have been contacted directly.
Thank you very much for your participation!
